Energy Saving Technologies and Best Practices for 5G Radio Access Network

This article identifies energy-saving potential of the fifth generation (5G) Radio Access Network, and describes main principles technologies. It explores how to use network energy saving technologies, such as carrier shutdown, channel symbol shutdown in 5G network, that have been inherited from 4G. Some enhanced technologies for like equipment deep sleep aggregation also introduced this article. However, it is far enough an innovative solution should be considered. To meet requirements development intelligent self-adaptive solution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) big data analysis are form a more precise strategy based on site-specific traffic site-related conditions, thus improving efficiency reducing manpower. Finally, two commercial application practices AI-based elaborated. One practice service awareness 4G/5G collaborative networks, benefits can improved up 20%; The other adoption new architecture Active Antenna Unit (AAU) with beam pattern optimization, its promoted by 30%. These could help mobile operators (MNOs) achieve most energy-efficient good performance lower Operating Expense (OPEX).
